Xe'ls in his Raven form Xe'ls in his true form

Xe’ls and/or Raven Spirit

Myth/Folklore ~ NATIVE AMERICANS ~ Xe’ls or Xelas (Pronounced: Zales) is the transformer-culture-hero of the Puget Sound region (near Washington state (USA) and British Columbia, Canada on the Pacific coast). The Lummi Tribe primarily uses this name. I have only been able to find information on Xe’ls in one book: "In myths there was an age when the world was different, its people were like both humans and animals of the present age, and it was full of dangerous monsters. The myth age ended when xé - ĺs the Transformer came though the world, transforming monsters and other myth-age beings into rocks and animals, and setting things in order for the people of the present age (Suttles 466)." I have not yet been able to find a source that definitely says that Xe’ls is Raven Spirit; however the Raven does appear in many of the Native American Traditions. Raven is also known as He’mask.as in the Bella Bella tradition, Kwekwaxa’we in the Kwakiutl tradition, Nankil’slas in the Haida tradition, Txamsem or We-gyet in the Tsimshian tradition, and Yehl in the Tlingit tradition. The Raven (or Crow) Spirit is a common character in almost all Native American traditions. Raven is a creator, trickster, messenger, and a helper to humankind. He is referred to as a trickster/transformer character, which means he can change shape at will. In most of the stories, he is paired with Coyote (or Wolf), who is also a trickster/transformer character. The trickster is usually stubborn, avarice, cruel, chicane, and prone to duplicity. These traits usually caused their plots to backfire. However, “…the Transformer is serious and concerned for human welfare (Suttles 466).” In the West Coast traditions (ranging from Alaska to California) Raven is said to have created humans by calling them up from the earth (or discovered the first human babies in a clamshell), bringing humans the first berries and salmon, and stealing the sun and moon from the Sky Chief and putting them in the sky.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A protective alien, who disguises himself as the Raven Spirit, and watches over a group of Coast Salish Native Americans on Planet PXY-887. An unnamed Goa’uld brought the Salish to this planet from Earth. This race of aliens (to which Xe’ls belongs) liberated the planet from the Goa’uld about a millennia ago. The “Spirits” possess the powers of mass destruction, rapid healing, shape-shifting, telepathy, and teleportation. It is not known if PXY-887 is the Spirits’ native home world, however since they have chosen to shape-sift in order to coexist with the Salish, it is thought so. They have buried the Stargate in order to further protect the Salish (213– Spirits).
